Rating system

As of 2023, most QIS had a rating system in place (42 QIS). Three different methods are typically used in a QIS for combining information from the quality indicators: 1) a building block approach in which a set of quality indicators must be met in full before a program can receive the rating for that level; 2) a points system in which points are awarded for meeting each quality indicators and quality level is assigned based on the number of points earned; or a combination of the building block and points approach.

In 2023, most QIS operated a block system (29 QIS); 7 QIS operated a points system; and 20 QIS operated a hybrid system.

The chart below summarizes the rating system types used across QIS. Use the buttons or arrows above the chart to view a map that shows which states/territories use each rating type. Hover over the bars and states/territories for additional details.
